The Masters is now over and I can probably speak for most golf fans that it now feels empty inside. What a great tournament to watch and only 365 more days until the 2025 Masters. Here are some of my takeaways from the Masters:
Bet Scottie Scheffler until further notice
There really isn't much else to say. This guy is unstoppable, winning three of his last 4 tournaments. I assume he will take this week off to be with his family as he is expecting his first child any day now, giving other golfers on tour the chance to shine at the RBC Heritage. Selfishly, I would have loved to see Scottie win and then just bust out of Augusta and roll up to the hospital in hi sgreen jacket. Missed opportunity if you ask me but still happy to see Scottie win and all of this success couldn't have happened to a better human being. Even after winning his second green jacket, he made time to express that his faith and family are more important than golf. I have all the respect in the world for this man.
Ludvig Aberg got that dog in him
Yes, I am writing about Ludvig again and I will keep writing about this kid until he wins. To come into your first Masters appearance and place solo 2nd, while shooting two under on Masters Sunday, is pretty impressive. I love the way he seems to approach the game, laughing after a double bogey, smiling after capitalizing on big opportunities. He looked to be calm, cool, and collected the whole way. Im sure his caddie, Joe Skovron, has also played a big role in his recent success. If you guys remember, Joe was Rickie Fowler's caddie when he first arrived on tour. He has some experience guiding young players around Augusta. Either way, this kid has all of the tools to be a star and I look forward to seeing him win very soon.
Bryson Dechambeau and his science
We all have probably heard about Bryson's 3D printed clubs by now. Apparently the club face is designed to correct shot variance and straighten the ball out off the club face or something like that, I am paraphrasing. This new tech has the golf world buzzing and sparking debate. First off I would like to say that none of these arguments should have anything to do with Bryson himself. It seems he did the right thing and had the technology sent through the proper channels and approved by the correct parties. He had every right to use the clubs at that point. However, it still is a little strange that the tech was approved THAT WEEK for use. It ultimately didn't seem to matter that much in the end as Bryson ended up tied for 6th and I do believe that it was blown out of proportion only because he was leading the tournament for a brief moment. I am not against new tech but I do believe that players should have the opportunity to look into it once it comes out. Give other players some time to use it and decide for themselves if they would like to use it or not. In general, if one player has a technological advantage over all of the other players because that technology was not available to them, that sounds like a problem. Again, this has nothing to do with Bryson. I respect him for being innovative and pushing limits.
Gray Moore securing the bag
Nobody had a better week than Augusta National caddie Gray Moore, who was on the bag for Tommy Fleetwood this week. The duo finished tied for 3rd at the Masters, which earned Fleetwood $1,040,000. If I did the math correctly, that would probably net Gray Moore around $83,000. Life changing money and well deserved as it obviously made a difference for Tommy Fleetwood, who had only had two top 20 finishes in his last 6 tournaments prior to the Masters. Good for Gray Moore, I hope he buys something nice.
What happened to Jon Rahm?
The defending champion ended the Masters tied for 45th with a +9. However the real issue seems to be his attitude. I mentioned in my last blog that I like Jon Rahm but it seems like lately he has done a lot of complaining, including that they should have not been out there playing in the wind on Friday. Then while at the green jacket ceremony and in the clubhouse after, he just looked miserable. Granted, it had been a long week for him and a long day, I get that and I will never know what that is like. However I guess I expected Rahm to act like someone who has been there before. I guess I was wrong. Some believe that the move to LIV has affected him more than they think. Did the move add a little pressure? Was he a little nervous facing his old PGA buddies? I am not really sure but something seems to be up with him.
There are plenty of things to recap but I'll just keep it short and sweet. We have to wait a year for another Masters and it cant come soon enough but I am looking forward to the RBC this week!
